What makes a healthy, long-term relationship is different for everyone. No two partnerships are the same as people have different needs and expectations. You can’t completely compare your situation to someone else’s, as you and your partner have your own unique connection and story. Here are some key tips to building a healthy relationship that will stand the test of time…

Remember you’re a team

When it comes to facing problems or changes, it’s important to remember that you’re a team and it’s both of you against the problem. It’s easier to overcome obstacles and become stronger as a couple if you face things together.

Have your own hobbies

Whilst it’s nice to have common interests and things that you enjoy doing together as a couple, it’s also important to have your own hobbies and friends. One person can’t meet all your needs and this expectation can put too much pressure on a relationship.

Make time for dates

Commit to spending quality time together on a regular basis, now matter how busy you are. Make time for date nights to keep the romance alive, even if you’ve been together for a while.

Communication is key

Having good, open communication is a fundamental part of any healthy relationship. This includes both talking and listening, and even non verbal cues. It’s important to tell your partner what you want and how you’re feeling instead of making them guess.

Pick and choose your battles

Conflict is inevitable in any relationship, but if you feel like your conflict is going nowhere, remind yourself to let go. If you can’t come to an agreement, agree to disagree.
